Helotes, Boerne, and New Braunfels are the three names I hear most from buyers moving out of the city, and they are genuinely different places. The right choice depends on your commute, your school priorities, and the kind of weekend you want.
Here is the honest comparison I give clients, based on living and working in these markets for nearly three decades.
Helotes: closest to the city, small-town pace
Helotes is about 15 miles northwest of downtown, which makes it the easiest Hill Country commute of the three. It keeps its small-town character, from Old Town and the Cornyval festival to John T. Floore's Country Store. Schools are mostly Northside ISD, with portions served by Boerne ISD.
It is the right pick if you want oak-shaded lots and a slower pace but still need to reach the medical center or downtown quickly.
Boerne: the school district and the main street
Boerne is about 30 minutes northwest, and it is the town buyers mention most when schools are the priority. Boerne ISD is consistently one of the region's most in-demand districts. The historic Hill Country Mile gives you a walkable main street with shops, cafes, and galleries, and Cibolo Creek runs right through town.
It is the right pick if you want a top district, a real downtown, and a scenic commute you do not mind taking.
New Braunfels: rivers, heritage, and two-city access
New Braunfels sits about halfway between San Antonio and Austin, which makes it the pick for households with jobs in both cities. The Comal River, Gruene, Schlitterbahn, and Wurstfest give it a year-round weekend culture, and both Comal ISD and New Braunfels ISD are strong.
It is the right pick if the river lifestyle matters and you want the flexibility of a San Antonio and Austin commute.
How to decide
Make a list of your non-negotiables: commute time, school district, lot size, and what you do on weekends. Then spend one afternoon in each town, driving the route you would actually drive and walking the main street. The town that feels like your life is the one.
